The Farmer Ken
“One of the things that keep me grounded is my garden. It reminds me of my family and of Ohio. Gardening is not only therapeutic, it's an essential skill and a "lost art". There are skills that are learned through experience and then there is also science behind some of the techniques that I use. One of my goals is to equip people with knowledge to be successful with their own gardens.
Fertile Soil
Gardening has always been a special part of my family. My garden journey started in Ohio at age 5 with my Grandmother and Great-Grandmother. I grew gardens throughout my youth, which built my foundation.
While at The Ohio State University, as one of my humanities projects, I took the initiative on starting a community Garden in an under-resourced neighborhood in Columbus, Ohio. Elated by the impact that the garden had on the community, I wanted to continue having a greater impact with more communities .
Community Driven
I graduated and relocated to Chicago, where I received a Master of Education from the University of Illinois at Chicago. I have implemented community gardens and have been able to help under-resourced communities and families in Ohio, Illinois and now Los Angeles.
One of my goals is to is provide fresh produce to youth and families in under-resourced communities with limited access to fresh food alternatives. Many areas are saturated with fast food restaurants and convivence stores, and very few grocery stores.
The Farm
My current farm is a little over an acre and has 8 times the space as my last location. We produce fruit, vegetables, flowers, herbs, and chicken eggs. Many areas are grown in a no till, Food Forest permaculture style with a vast diversity in crop selection. We follow sustainable, organic practices and use certified organic fertilizers and organic pest control methods as needed. Native plants have been incorporated into the land to provide a habitat for wildlife. We also practice seed savings and collect seeds from our own crops for future planting.
